Following on from Miss Brown’s decision to move on to new challenges I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Dr Gemma Smith as Ounsdale’s new Head.
It was very encouraging to be able to select from a group of such high quality candidates and is a good indication of the esteem in which both our school and Invictus is held. We had seventeen original applicants from which we selected seven to join a two day assessment process. This involved a rigorous selection procedure with three people making it through to the final day of presentations and interviews. Dr Smith emerged as a clear successor to Miss Brown.
Dr Smith has been a Deputy Head at Sandwell Academy since 2008, having previously been at Walsall Academy and Colton Hills. She is local, born in Gornal and attended Roberts School before going to Codsall High.
She now lives in Sedgley, knows Ounsdale well and, more importantly, the ethos and values that we, and Invictus, espouse.
Her own academic achievements are second to none and her views on academic rigour with all students having the capacity and opportunity to do absolutely the best they can comes through strongly in all she says.
During her time at Sandwell they achieved three consecutive Outstanding judgments from OFSTED. Her longevity as Deputy Head, during this time, is illustrative of her own influence in this success and has imbued her with a deep desire to bring that success to Ounsdale. Excellence in all fields, not just academic, is her mantra and the very experienced panel felt that she was the candidate most likely to drive Ounsdale towards being “the very best in class”.
Although Dr Smith will be joining us formally in September she has already made several visits to the school, has addressed new year 7 parents and attended her first Governors’ meeting.
